Lesson 1 of 4

The cream, the finishing touch of the treatment

What role the cream plays in treatment, the skin's biological clock, and why sleep is the foundation of a nighttime formulation.

# Introduction

The cream is the transition between what you have worked on in the treatment room and what the skin does afterward, on its own, during the weeks you don't see it. It goes on after the serum and before the sunscreen, and its function is to sustain the previous work, curb transepidermal water loss, and restore the conditions for the barrier to continue functioning by itself.

That is the difference between treating a skin and supporting it. A barrier that works well regulates inflammation, supports the microbiome, and responds better to everything that comes after: it is one of the factors that most determines how that skin will age over the next decade.

Every treatment requires its own finishing touch. Some sessions end with light hydration, while others feature the cream as a structural part of the protocol. The decision depends on the state of the skin, what you have done beforehand, and what that person will be able to maintain at home.

# The three pillars: sustain, protect and repair

Sustain the work

The cream maintains hydration in the tissue and continues the effects of what you activated during the session: it is what allows the serum to perform at its best.

By day: protect

During the day, the focus is on barrier function and defense against the exposome. Textures that absorb quickly and work well with sun protection, which should always be applied last.

At night: repair

At night, cortisol levels drop, collagen synthesis accelerates, and the lipid matrix is rebuilt. This is when regenerative formulas come into play.

# Chronobiology and epigenetics: the skin clock

The skin operates on its own clock. Its cells have clock genes, such as CLOCK and BMAL1, which mark which processes are activated at any given time of day. This clock works at an epigenetic level: it modifies how DNA is packaged to switch defense, renewal, and repair genes on or off, depending on the time.

By day, the skin prioritizes protection against the exposome: radiation, pollution, and oxidative stress. By night, with cortisol at its lowest point, repair is activated: collagen synthesis, keratinocyte proliferation, and the activity of DNA-repairing enzymes increase, and the barrier is rebuilt.

Sustained stress, lack of sleep, and irregular schedules disrupt this clock, and with it the gene expression pattern that maintains youthful skin. Formulating with respect for this rhythm means working in favor of the skin's biology. That is why Nutrition is a nighttime formula, and why for mature skin the regimen that works best is Matrix Bloom in the morning and Nutrition at night: structure and defense by day, adaptogenic regeneration by night.

The epigenetics of our serums, with exosomes and peptides, is detailed in the course The Serums →

# Sleep, the foundation of a nighttime formulation

Asking about sleep before choosing a cream is a clinical criterion. In a study that classified women according to their sleep quality, those who slept worse started with a more permeable barrier and, after a controlled tissue aggression, recovered significantly less at 72 hours than those who slept well; they also showed more signs of intrinsic aging.

The skin rebuilds its barrier while the person sleeps. This is why Nutrition is an exclusively nocturnal formula and why its essential oils are also selected for their sleep-inducing effect: taking care of the skin at night starts with taking care of sleep itself.

We develop this in depth in our article Sleep and the skin, which we will publish in mid-October at the Mastery level of the Academy.

The map of textures and sensations

Texture determines the glide during a massage, the speed of absorption, the degree of occlusion, and how long water remains in the tissue. The aroma goes directly into the limbic system and modulates the stress response. And every cream combines both into a unique sensation.

Each finish communicates something different to the skin from the very first touch.
Each finish communicates something different to the skin from the very first touch.

# Choose also by aroma

The olfactory pathway is the most direct route to the limbic system, where a large part of the stress response is regulated. A client who arrives feeling overwhelmed needs something different from one who arrives feeling drained, even if their skin requires the same level of nourishment.

Ask how they are sleeping, how their week is going, and what scents they enjoy. Between two creams with a similar level of hydration, that information is the deciding factor, and it is also what turns a recommendation into something that will actually be used for months.

# Every cream, a sensation

Two creams can have a similar hydration level and provoke very different sensations. In our line, each formula has its own sensory approach, designed for what the skin needs and also for what the person needs to feel.

Moisture Light · Lightness. Immediate absorption, fresh finish, and lavender that calms without weight. For those who need to feel their skin free.

Moisture Plus · Comfort and energy. An enveloping emulsion with neroli, revitalizing and balancing. For tight skin and those who feel worn out.

Matrix Bloom · Support. Unctuous texture that glides during a long massage and leaves skin nourished and supple. For tissue that asks for structure.

Nutrition · Rest. Dense, velvety, and with sleep-inducing essential oils. For the night, when the skin repairs.

Pro-Décolleté · Firmness. Silky, matte, and flexible for the remodeling massage of an area that rarely receives specific treatment. Day and night.

Nutrition

The formula that started it all.

Regenerative night treatment formulated around the skin's circadian rhythm. Ginseng and Reishi act as adaptogens on tissue subjected to sustained stress; Tens'Up™ provides an immediate tightening effect and firmness upon waking; rosehip adds natural retinoids; centella and echinacea soothe and promote recovery; and shea, argan, and avocado lipids restore comfort and elasticity. Its essential oils, with vetiver as the star alongside damask rose, neroli, lavender, and rosewood, are selected for their sleep-inducing effect: we care for the skin and also for the rest that repairs it.

Treatment room uses

Only at night, when the skin enters its repair phase. Also as a sleeping mask in an even layer. In the salon: deep upward massage (jawline, cheekbone, nasolabial fold), tapping on wrinkles, and application to relaxation points (décolleté, trapezius, temples) to activate the vetiver aroma.

# Nutrition's adaptogens: Ginseng and Reishi

In 2015, when we formulated Nutrition, adaptogens were still a new concept for cosmetics. We chose Ginseng at its source, in China, because the quality of the active ingredient determines the quality of the result. Today, Nutrition is our most awarded product: Best Night Cream at the Beauty Shortlist Awards 2025, 2023, 2018, and 2017, and Editor's Choice in 2026 and 2016.

Panax Ginseng. Its ginsenosides reduce reactive oxygen species, inhibit MMP-1 (the enzyme that degrades collagen), promote type I procollagen synthesis, and lower IL-1β and IL-6 in human dermal fibroblasts. Ginsenoside Rb3 stimulates collagen through the TGF-β pathway, and in a randomized trial with 78 participants, red ginseng improved wrinkles and elasticity compared to a placebo.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum). It activates antioxidant and cytoprotective genes (HO-1, γGCS, NQO1) in fibroblasts, modulates cellular senescence, and provides polysaccharides and triterpenes that neutralize free radicals and support mitochondrial function. It is the most epigenetic part of the formula: it changes which defense genes the cell expresses.

Together, at night. Ginseng and Reishi work while the skin is in full repair mode, and support its ability to adapt to the stress accumulated during the day.

Nutrition results (independent study, 4 weeks): 25 to 34% reduction in wrinkles on the forehead and nasolabial fold; 100% perceived their skin as firmer, more flexible, and more nourished and soft.

Customer profiles

These are four frequent cases in the treatment room, with an initial proposal for each. They are a starting point for treatment.

The final decision is yours, because there are many nuances that can only be seen in person and that we have been working on throughout the course: the aromas they prefer, the texture and absorption they tolerate, how they sleep, whether there are spots, reactivity or hormonal changes, and what they will be able to maintain at home.

Each profile always requires a more personal reading and interpretation. Your judgment at the treatment table is the most important thing.

Profile 1

40+ combination skin with shine and fine lines

Balance · Prevention

You want a lightweight texture and a treatment that truly works.

You need weightless daytime hydration and a formula that truly works at night. Here, texture is the deciding factor for consistency, and consistency is what builds long-term results.

01DayMoisture Light and Velvet Shield on top.
02NightNutrition, for regenerative work.

* Treatment supplement: Clear serum if there is sebaceous imbalance or Vitality if expression lines are the priority, always before the cream. One or two nights a week, a few drops of Serenity Oil mixed with Nutrition.

✦If you dislike rich textures, it is better to use Moisture Light applied properly every day than a rich cream that ends up in a drawer.
Profile 2

Mature skin undergoing hormonal changes

Density · Regeneration

Loss of density, new dryness, and irregular rest.

The goal is structure by day and regeneration by night. This is the profile where chronobiology and the skin-mind axis are most noticeable in the results.

01DayMatrix Bloom: structure, ceramides, and comfort.
02NightNutrition: adaptogens and lifting effect.
03Neck and décolletéPro-Décolleté, day and night.

* Treatment supplement: Vitality day serum for its tightening effect, and Resilience at night if there is reactivity, always before the cream.

✦Nutrition's sleep-inducing essential oils are a plus for a profile that almost always sleeps worse than they admit.
Profile 3

Reactive or post-procedure skin

Barrier · Calm

Compromised barrier: few steps and maximum tolerance.

Fewer steps and more tolerance. When the barrier recovers its function, everything else performs again.

01Day and nightMoisture Plus for its calendula and comfort, or Matrix Bloom for the ceramides.
02In-salonRecovery during cleansing and Revival without activation.

* Treatment supplement: Resilience serum as a base, morning and night, always before your cream. If your skin is very reactive, discontinue everything else for two weeks and reintroduce products one by one.

✦Avoid adding Nutrition or Pro-Décolleté while there is active erythema: wait until the tissue returns to its range.
Profile 4

Sagging neck and décolletage

Firmness · Forgotten zone

The area that most reveals one's age and the one that is treated the least.

Thinner skin, fewer sebaceous glands, and years of unprotected exposure. It responds well when treated consistently and with specific products.

01Day and nightPro-Décolleté using upward movements up to the jawline.
02DaytimeSPF extended to the décolleté, over the cream.
03In-salonMassage the area with Harmony and finish with Pro-Décolleté.

* Treatment supplement: Vitality serum also on the neck in firming protocols, always before the cream.

✦Bringing the motion down to the décolletage in every session trains the client to repeat it at home. It is the part of the routine that is most often forgotten.

# Synergies with serums and oils

The combinations depend on the profile you have in front of you and the current state of that skin.

With serums. The serum always goes before the cream: it defines the goal, and the cream maintains the result. Resilience calls for a comfortable cream; Vitality works well under Matrix Bloom or Nutrition; Unify, with any cream as long as SPF is included during the day.

With oils. Serenity Oil, a few drops over the cream or mixed in the palm, increases occlusion and comfort for dry skin or on very cold nights. In the treatment room, Harmony is the massage oil and the cream follows afterwards.

As a general rule, more occlusion means more water retention in the tissue and less freshness: choose based on what that skin and that person can tolerate.
